Entlebucher Mountain Dog
Swiss herders developed four breeds of mountain dog known for their striking tricolor coats. Of these, the Entlebucher (ENT-leh-boo-cur) Mountain Dog is the smallest and quickest. They’re muscular, long-backed cattle dogs with short, sturdy legs. They stand from 16 to 21 inches at the shoulder, with females at the lower end of the scale. Their dark eyes draw you into an attentive, friendly face. Bred to move cattle up and down sloping pastures, Entles are famous for agility, balance, and rugged determination.
Grooming
Bathing the Entlebucher Mountain Dog: The Entlebucher has a double coat with two distinct shedding cycles; spring and fall. We recommend Simple Shed Shampoo, which has oat proteins to help loosen the undercoat. Follow that up with Simple Shed Treatment. After the Simple Shed Treatment is worked into the fur, use an undercoat rake and brush through the coat while the Simple Shed Treatment is still present. This will pull out the undercoat and help prevent drain clogs when bathing in a tub. If you are bathing your dog outside, it will release the coat and dramatically cut down on brush out time.
Since this is a family pet and will require routine baths between shedding cycles, we suggest using Energee Plus Shampoo. This dog has an oily outer coat to help it maintain the waterproof protection needed for harsh conditions and the shampoo is gentle enough not to strip the oil gland in the skin but will take care of the oil on the coat for a fantastic feel.
Show Dog Tips
Use Silky Show Shampoo and Silky Show Conditioner to keep moisture in the coat, as well as important silk proteins. Applying our High Sheen Finishing Spray right before entering the show ring will add extra shine without any oily residue.
Coat Care
Aloe Hydrating Spray between baths will keep the coat moisturized and in great shape, while our Hot Oil Treatment will help bring out the natural luster of the coat, plus control dandruff. For added fragrance and conditioning, use one of Espree’ s fragrant leave-in conditioning colognes.
Eyes
Your dog’s eyes should generally be alert and bright. Use Opti-Soothe Eye Wash during bath time or to flush the eye if you see any foreign objects, since this breed love the outdoors.
Ears
For monthly ear cleaning, use Espree Ear Care. If weekly care is needed for an existing chronic ear condition, use Espree Ear Care Aloe Wipes. This routine will help keep any ear problems at bay. Remember, never clean further than you can see inside the ear.
Paws
Paw Balm should be used weekly, since paw pads that are soft and pliable are less likely to dry and crack during the cold winter months. Soft pads will also keep stickers or rocks from damaging the pads of the feet.
Common Problems
Coat and Skin: Hot spots are a common problem for this breed, especially during the summer months. If moisture gets trapped in the coat, hot spots are possible. To prevent hot spots, you must remove the dead undercoat, so the air can get down to the skin. Our Hot Spot Foam is a very effective treatment for this condition.
Fleas and ticks are also a common issue for these athletic and active dogs.
