Beauceron - Breed and Grooming Tips

Beaucerons are big but graceful herders immediately recognized by their dark black coats with squirrel-red markings, including their trademark red stockings. They’re also seen in a black-gray-tan coat. Standing as high as 27.5 inches at the shoulder, Beaucerons are in all ways balanced, moderate dogs, immensely strong and seemingly indestructible but never clunky or plodding. The long head is well chiseled, and the dark brown eyes project an expression the breed’s fans describe as frank and confident.

A Look Back: The Beauceron is a distinct French breed of herding dog. The Beauceron is a well balanced, solid dog of good height and well muscled without heaviness or coarseness.

Right breed for you? They enjoy exercise and are extremely athletic. They thrive in a large outdoor environment when it comes to exercise. Without the proper exercise they can be difficult and destructive. They need a variety of locations and types of exercise each day. They can benefit from agility training but are not as suited to competition as other breeds. Beaucerons are extremely versatile so research a variety of activities and training to make a well-rounded dog.

Coat & Grooming: Like most dogs who work outdoors for long hours, they have a protective double coat, which does shed. This dog will require more than regular brushing during its twice annual shed to keep shedding minimal. Their nails should be attended to with a nail trimmer or grinder regularly to avoid overgrowth, splitting and cracking. Their ears should be checked regularly to avoid a buildup of wax and debris which can result in an infection. Teeth should be brushed regularly.
