Black and Tan Coonhound - Breed and Grooming Tips

Like their Beagle and Bloodhound cousins in the hound family, Black and Tan Coonhounds have an amazingly sensitive nose, long velvety ears, and a sweet disposition. The coal-black coat features rich tan accents, including the distinctive “pumpkin seeds” above keenly expressive eyes. These are big, strong hounds: A good-size male can stand 27 inches at the shoulder; he’s considerably taller when the majestic oval-shaped head is taken into account. A well-built Black and Tan Coonhound covers ground with effortless, eager strides.

Bathing the Black and Tan Coonhound: The typical owner of this breed will use it as a hunting dog. Before going out to hunt and track, it is a good idea to bathe this dog in Aloe Oatbath Medicated Shampoo. This shampoo has no harsh detergents or fragrances, which will help mask the dog’s scent from the animal it is hunting, even if the hound is downwind. If your Coonhound is an indoor pet, we recommend a great fragrance shampoo like Strawberry Lemonade Shampoo to keep it smelling good for days. Following that up with our Silky Show Conditioner will keep the coat velvety and shiny.

Between Bath Coat Care: During the dry winter months, or in generally dry climates, use Aloe Hydrating Spray to hydrate and moisturize the skin and coat. For a quick bath in between regular “full baths”, use Aloe Oat Waterless Bath. Simply spray on and wipe with a towel.

Ears: For monthly ear cleaning, use Espree Ear Care. If weekly care is needed for an existing chronic ear condition, use Espree Ear Care Aloe Wipes. This routine will help keep any ear problems at bay. Remember, never clean further than you can see inside the ear.

Eyes: Optisoothe Eye Wash can be used to help flush foreign matter, such as leftover shampoo, as well as help rinse common eye allergens while soothing any irritation.

Tools: Using a rubber curry brush, such as a Zoom Groom, will help maintain a velvety smooth coated, while also helping to keep hair off your clothes and furniture. Keep in mind the Coonhound’s dense coat it will have it shedding all year round.

Common Problems

Coat and Skin: Fleas and ticks are also a common issue for these athletic and active dogs. Our Flea and Tick Shampoo is fantastic and loved by groomers, while the Flea and Tick Pet Spray keeps them away for up to twelve days. Before outdoor activities, especially hunting, use Flea & Tick Repellent Wipes for a quick repellent method.

Skin abrasions and bug bites can occur while your dog is running and exploring outside. Keep 3 in 1 Healing Cream and Bug Bite Relief on hand for when those accidents happen.

Health: A diet with essential fatty acids is a must. We recommend Pure Icelandic Salmon Oil, which has all of the omega fatty acids and omegas your dog will need.

Paws: Rub Paw Balm on the pads of the feet to protect and condition the pads since this breed loves to dig. Paw Balm will keep its paws soft and help keep from cracking.
